My Personal Biography

This section of the website is an overview of various aspects of my life. If you want to know more about my Internet history and the plans for this site specifically, click here. This section is my own personal biography as I am the only person writing for this site as of March 2021. If that changes I will update this paragraph to indicate such.
I am not going to go in to great detail about any one aspect of my life. What I intend to do with this section is give you some very basic information to give you a better idea of what types of things I will be writing about going forward.

Birth, Education and Employment

My name is Casey and I was born in Huron South Dakota in January 1981. Which means that as I write this, I have just recently turned the big four zero.
I was educated in the Huron Public School District. In High School, my primary activity was debate, where I did quite well, particularly my senior year. After graduating from High School in 1999 I attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. for five years (where I majored in History) though I did not graduate. I intend to write more specific posts about my time in college, my failure to graduate and how what happened has had a large impact on my world view over the past few years.
I have worked several jobs in my life starting when I was a junior in High School and worked at McDonalds. As I write this I am currently unemployed.

Current Status

As of March 2021, I am single, having never been married and I have no children of my own. I still live in my home town of Huron as do my two older brothers and their significant others. My mother lives out in the country but has plans to move back to Huron soon. She shares her house with my sister and her fiance. I have several nephews and nieces. My father passed away in April 2016. I delivered the eulogy at his funeral which you can view here. I like living where I do because I am close to friends as well as immediate and extended family.

Personality

I don’t, as a rule, like to describe myself to other people. However, one of the reasons for relaunching my blog is to work on areas in which I find myself lacking. The first thing I want people to know about my personality is that I have a wicked sense of humor. I enjoy laughing and even more than that, I enjoy making others laugh. I am very good with one liners…although I may be the only person to believe that to be true.
I tend to gravitate to things that make me feel comfortable. I would never call myself spontaneous although that is something I am working on. I tend to get anxious when I am in unfamiliar settings or in large crowds. I value intelligence and wisdom as well as honesty and loyalty. If you read my writing, you may not always agree with my positions but I don’t think you will ever say that I am being dishonest about my feelings. I take pride in being truthful, even when being truthful has the potential to harm my own self-interest.
If you are familiar with the concept of the five love languages my strongest one is quality time. Even though I am a definite introvert, I still appreciate time spent with others more than I do words of affirmation, physical touch, acts of service and gifts. Although I am open to all of them and if you want to get me a gift, here is my wish list on Amazon.

Living with a Disability

I have been visually impaired since birth. I will spare you the medical terminology and just say that my right eye never formed at all and my left eye only formed partially. I have experiened a lot of vision loss over my life starting in bout the 7th grade and as I write this in 2021, I am totally blind. As a result, I have an interest in advocating on behalf of people with visual impairments. I am proud to be a member of both the South Dakota Association of the Blind and American Council of the Blind. This is another one of those subjects I tend to write about extensively going forward. Just to answer the most obvious question first, yes, I do know how to read Braille.
One of the biggest complications for me being totally blind is that I also suffer from Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder. In a number of ways that will be explored in the future, the sleep disorder frustrates me far more than being totally blind.

Hobbies and Interests

You wouldn’t be reading this page at all if I didn’t have an interest in writing. Honestly, I have never thought of myself as a terribly gifted writer but that hasn’t stopped many people from suggesting that I write a book. It is actually a goal of mine and I do have a couple of ideas but it is far more likely that the contents of any book I might write just end up as posts on this website.
I consider myself to be a fairly avid reader although I know a lot of people who read much more than I do. You can check out my profile on Goodreads to get an idea of the things I like to read and books I plan to read in the future. I am happy to accept any and all friend requests over there. I will post from time to time about the books that I have heard but I have honestly never liked any of my audiobook reviews.
I am a pretty big fan of a lot of sports. I cheer for the Atlanta Braves, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Lakers and Colorado Avalanche. I also enjoy watching Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts and Professional Wrestling. I don’t intend to write about sports very often but when I do I will talk about them in big picture terms instead of talking about results of individual games or news items.
I enjoy movies and television as well. I am a big fan of old sitcoms and animation. I love the original Star Wars trilogy and expanded universe but for a number of reasons documented at this link I no longer consider myself to be a fan in the Disney era.
I also enjoy cooking, I wouldn’t say I’m great at it but my food hasn’t killed anyone…so far as you know. I don’t cook as often as I might like because cooking for one can be a real drag.

Christian Testimony

I have been a Christian since I first accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior at a neighbor’s home when I was a young child. I was active in Wednesday night church programs and youth groups as a child. As of this writing, I am not a regular church attendee and that is yet another subject that I will explore more in the future. I consider my best friend to be my spiritual mentor as I have learned more from him both in bible study and personal example than anyone else. In November of 2020, I made a decision to rededicate myself to prayer and it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

And just because I feel like it, I am embedding one of my favorite songs on this page because it is a good summary of how I feel when I consider the place that God occupies in my life.
