It Has Been Awhile…Again

So my plan to write more often after I relaunched this website has been, up to now, a complete failure. But that’s fine because at least I am able to see things for what they are. It is better to admit that I haven’t lived up to my goal so far than it would be to pretend as though I had or to pretend as though I had never set a goal in the first place.

In truth, a lot has been going on with me as of late and I just haven’t taken the time to sit down and think about it enough to write something summing it all up.

The first bit is that as I have mentioned before, my college best friend and his family have moved to town so that he could take the job as new school Superintendent. It has been so much fun to catch up with Kraig, his wife Nancy and to start to get to know their children. I even got to see Kraig’s parents for the first time since his wedding to Nancy as we all went out for dinner to celebrate Kraig’s birthday. I have told other people this but I feel like when it came to making friends, I hit the lottery when I met Kraig. He’s just such a great guy, incredibly generous and gracious, very helpful and fun to be around. I feel like I got the better end of the deal because Kraig got a friendship with me.

Another thing that has changed is that I am trying to be more independent as someone with a visual impairment. For me, this meant buying another robot. Last July I bought a robot vacuum and have been very happy with it so far, although I wish the thing were easier to empty out. So this year I decided to get a Brava Jet robot mop because not only do I not like to mop floors, I’m also not very good at it. I just need a robot to clean my shower and I am good to go.
I have also taken charge of doing my own laundry. Now, I always knew how to do my own laundry, I did it a bunch in college…though not all the time. But my mom usually helped me with it since I’ve lived in my current apartment. But last month I went down to the laundry room and learned the buttons on the washer and dryer. I should have done it a long time ago but it is more important that it is done now.

Another major change occurred late last month. When I was a kid, we always had cable TV in our home. When I went to college, I always had cable TV in my dorm. I always had some level of Cable TV package in my apartment…until July 21st. I finally called my cable company, a great company in my opinion, and asked them to cut my limited cable package. The final straw was looking at my bill and seeing that the taxes and fees actually cost more than the cable package itself. I kind of miss it because I haven’t really watched any Olympic coverage and I love the Olympics. I have Peacock but the one time I tried to use it to watch some Olympic events I got incredibly frustrated and quit. News stories suggest I’m not the only one.
I might subscribe to something like Sling TV during football season but I haven’t decided yet. I get the Raiders radio broadcasts online and really I’m good with just that. I have a DAZN subscription so I can watch Boxing, I have my extensive library of movies and TV shows I have purchased on iTunes, I have about 2765 Audiobooks to listen to and podcasts, so I’m fine for entertainment. Oh and like almost everyone else, I have Amazon Prime.

Speaking of podcasts, a friend introduced me to the Recovering Fundamentalist Podcast last month and out of all the things to happen, that will probably have the biggest impact when all is said and done. I don’t want to say too much because I believe that some things just require more thought and a bit more of an explanation and I’m not ready to assemble all of my thoughts just yet, so I will just say that it has really gotten me thinking in a way that I haven’t really in quite some time. It has made me reassess certain things from my own life and past that don’t look so great anymore, but it has also made me thankful that I didn’t have it nearly as bad as some other people.

I think that is about all I have to say for now but I think that is enough. I hope all who read this are doing well. This week was a bit difficult. I have been a little sick, I think it is either allergies or a head cold, although Covid can cause some of the same issues I’ve had so who knows? The hardest part was being under the weather on Monday when I was without running water because their was a leaky pipe in one of my walls that had to be repaired. So that was a long dayor it would have been had I not spent so much of it asleep. Be well and talk soon.
