Going Solo

Hello, everyone. It has been awhile since I’ve written anything of substance on my blog. I suppose it could be argued that such a thing has never happened but I’ll just leave that one alone. I have been very busy lately. So busy in fact that I am only now mentioning that my debut as the solo host of Talking Audiobooks aired on June 2. You can access that episode here and a book review I did here.

I am going to talk about the podcast and some of the things we’re doing in this post. However, I don’t want my blog to become nothing more than an advertisement for my podcast. The fact I want my blog to be more puts me in a bit of a spot.

If all of my audiobook content, or at least the book reviews end up on the podcast then I will need other things to write about. Sure, I haven’t written a review in awhile but I do try and keep you posted on audiobook sales, free downloads and such.

I could talk more about my personal life but this brings me to another question. What personal life? Seriously, it is pretty stable right now. I hang out with my friends, spend time with my mom, go to the movies from time to time, engage in other activities and keep active on social media. Hardly the type of thing that merits a lot of words right now.

I’m not dating anyone and am not really close. I don’t really know how I feel about it. I feel like I should be coupled up and that I do want to be dating. But when it comes to making a serious effort, I haven’t really done that in years. I think maybe if I don’t make a serious effort I can’t really say that I’m failing at it. Because I can always say that I could try harder but if I do make that effort and nothing happens, the excuse is gone.

Anyway, back to the podcast. Things are moving at a slow and steady pace. It is still early and there are bugs to be worked out but that is to be expected. If you told me when I agreed to do this that it would result in me trying to get my Braile Embosser working I might have thought you were crazy.
For those who don’t know, a Braille Embosser is basically a printer that hooks up to your computer only it prints in Braille, not print, as you can tell by the name.
Why would I want to use this for a podcast? I need to be able to print out notes that I can reference, particularly as I do a book review. The regular weekly podcast that airs on Fridays is easier for me to record because I can digress and go off on tangents and stuff and that’s okay. But for a book review, I want to stay on topic and that is easier to do if I have notes or a script to work from. The first book review, linked above, was recorded without a script. It took way too long and was way too frustrating. I attempted another and gave up after making little progress.
I need a special cable because my computer doesn’t have parallel cable slots and the embosser is old and uses parallel cables. Embossers are really expensive, thousands of dollars, so a cheap cable is much more of an option than replacing the machine.
The other expense will be the continuous feed Braille printer paper that I am going to need. That will cost a lot more than the cable. But once I have this up and going, it will make things a lot easier.

The show has a book club. I was thinking of different show ideas and thought what if I could get my friends to read the same book as me each month and then get together to record a roundtable discussion? I reached out to two of them and they readily agreed. I suggested the concept in a post on Facebook and picked up a third for sure and a possible forth.
This month, we are listening to The Yucks: Two Years in Tampa with the Losingest Team in NFL History by Jason Vuic, narrated by Patrick Lawlor for Tantor Audio.
We will have mechanisms in place to allow anyone who decides to listen along with us in a given month to contribute their own feedback. That will be hopefully announced soon. Right now, the list of things to be done isn’t getting shorter, the items are just changing.

So one more thing. We have a giveaway going on this month. I don’t want to give out the details but it is a goodone. I don’t want to give out the details because I want you to listen to the show to get them. So check out this show if you want to know how to win an interesting prize.

Things are going well on a couple of other fronts related to the show. I’ve picked up a lot more followers on social media andhave gotten more connected to audiobook bloggers. That will help me in the future when it comes to show content. I have also reached out to a narrator to be my first narrator interview. Crossing my fingers in the hopes that he’ll agree. That’s all I have for now. Talk soon.
