Hello everyone, long time, no write. Although I guess it hasn’t really been that long, it just feels like forever. Anyway, I am happy to say that I am writing with a purpose today as I have an announcement to make.
You may or may not recall that back in December, I was the guest on a podcast called Talking Audiobooks. You can download and listen to my episode directly by clicking here. You may also notice that there hasn’t been a new episode of that podcast produced since I was on. No, I didn’t do such a poor job that the host decided to quit podcasting altogether.
I am actually happy to report that I have remained in contact with Ken since then. We discuss many topics including life in general and a solid friendship has been developing. One thing that we have discussed from time to time is Talking Audiobooks.
Well, on Tuesday night he sent me an email and it contained a proposal. He offered to let me take over the reigns of Talking Audiobooks as the host. I would also be able to set the content direction of the show working closely with Ken as producer.
He had a number of different reasons why he thought this was a good idea. I asked for a few days to consider it as I am not the type of person to rush into a decision immediately. Things always tend to go wrong when I do that sort of thing.
In actuality, I had a strong hunch that this is what he was going to ask me. Things seemed to be heading in that direction for awhile. That’s why his offer did not come as a surprise to me and in fact, I was actually hoping it was coming. I expected it so much that I had even begun to think of ideas for things I would like to do and people I would like to interview. Even with all of that I still wanted some time to think about it. I asked for a week.
Well, I asked for a week and took a day and a half. On Thursday evening, I sent an email back to Ken indicating that I would accept the job as host of the show. He acknowledged my email on Friday morning which means that it is offical. There are still some details to be worked out but they are all minor enough that I am comfortable sharing the news with you now.
Planning for the show will begin this coming week. I have some ideas for things I would like to do as mentioned above but some of them are longer-term ideas so will need to be sorted out. I have a timeframe in mind for my first episode and when it should drop, however.
There are many reasons why I accepted this position. I have always felt like my true calling was to talk either by giving speeches or doing something in media. If I had a dollar for every time someone in my life told me I should be on the radio, I could probably live comfortably on my own private island. But the thing is, I never disagreed with them and this is my chance to find out if they are correct. Doing this could open the doors to other opportunities and would also look okay as a point on my resume.
I am going to be compensated for my work in a way that I can live with and while that is nice, it was the factor that interested me the least. I’ve wanted to get into podcasting again for awhile now as evidenced on this blog by some of my voice posts.
One thing that has kept me out of podcasting is the fact that I don’t know how to produce one on my own. In this case, I won’t have to worry about that. However, it may give me reason to learn the production and editing side of things so that down the road I could do it by myself.
I am not sure what this will mean just yet for the audiobook news and reviews that I would otherwise post here. The days of my writing reviews may be over as I may include them in the body of the podcast. I could still post some stuff here, one of the things Ken offered is for me to promote my own blog on the show, that being this one. So what I decide to do with audiobook contenton here will be entirely my decision.
I am a realist and I know that there is a chance that this could not work out the way I want. That would make me sad for a number of reasons but even in that case it would be worth it for the experience. Ultimately, the opportunity is too good to pass up and if I did I would always wonder what would have happened if I had gone ahead and tried? At least this way I will have that question answered. Even so, I am pretty excited for this opportunity and I don’t think it will be a failure.
I will keep you all posted as to when things will start to happen. As I said I have a timeframe in mind but I am going to take my time. I want to do as much of it the right way as I can right from the start. I know that the show 6 months after I start might not look anything like the first show but I still want to get off on the right foot as host.
That’s really all of the news I have to share right now but I think it is enough, don’t you?
