‘STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI: BEWARE THE POWER OF THE DARK SIDE’

OPENING LINE:

“Beware the power of the Dark Side” is still some of the best advice you could ever get.

PUBLISHER’S SUMMARY:

Acclaimed New York Times best-selling author Tom Angleberger delivers a captivating retelling of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi like you’ve never experienced before, infusing the iconic, classic tale of good versus evil with a unique perspective and narrative style that will speak directly to today’s young listeners while enhancing the Star Wars experience for core fans of the saga.

THE PLOT:

This is a retelling of ‘Return of the Jedi’ that is meant for younger readers. Out of the three books in this series, ‘Return of the Jedi’ is the most conventional in many ways. It doesn’t climb inside the heads of three main characters and it is not a self help book for Jedi in training.
Even though this is a more conventional retelling of the story, it still adds in some detail connecting ‘Jedi’ back to the prequel trilogy. It is also the most humorous of the three books with that humor coming mostly from the characters themselves but also coming from the voice of the narrator.
For reasons that will become clear as you read further in my review, I was tempted to give ‘Return of the Jedi’ a higher score. The only complaint I have is a minor one, but it was enough to make this my second favorite in this trilogy.
I come from the school of “Show. Don’t tell”, so there were some phrases used in the narration such as “more on that later” that I found a little distracting. Thankfully, as the story progressed and there became a lot less “later” to work with, they faded away.
If you can only take one lesson away from this retelling of ‘Return of the Jedi’ and are unwilling to “Beware the power of the Dark Side,” then I would hope that you would learn not to underestimate Ewoks. I’ve always considered myself to be sort of an Ewok agnostic, but after listening to this I do appreciate the symbolism to a greater degree than I did previously.

THE AUTHOR:

Tom Angleberger is no stranger to Star Wars, being the author of the Origami Yoda series of books. I found his more conventional approach to retelling ‘Return of the Jedi’ and his influx of humor to be in keeping with the lighthearted tone that exists throughout the actual film.

THE NARRATION:

Marc Thompson has the voices of these characters nailed down. This shouldn’t be a surprise considering he’s narrated some 300 billion Star Wars audiobooks by my last rough estimate. Still, I feel like I always find one new voice to appreciate, and in this recording it was his Emperor Palpatine.
It might be because out of those 300 billion Star Wars books he’s narrated, Palpatine himself appears in maybe 5 of them. There’s really no other reason for me not to have noticed how good that voice is in particular.

THE PRODUCTION:

Any audiobook that uses the victory celebration music from ‘Return of the Jedi’ is going to get a thumbs up from me.

CONCLUSION:

While ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ is the most commonly given response to the favorite Star Wars film question, for me it is ‘Return of the Jedi’. It is the film that produces the most emotion in me, particularly the scenes with Vader, The Emperor and Luke on the Death Star.
Reading Tom Angleberger’s retelling of ‘Return of the Jedi’, I was surprised to discover that all of those feelings came back. I felt the same way reading the book that I do when I watch the movie. I can’t think of a bigger compliment than that.
